Full Description

A moat is recorded on the first edition Ordnance Survey map at Snake Hall, Moulton. Nothing is known of the moat although the house was probably built in 1794. {1}{2}{4} The moat is very much mutilated and the south portion is now [1965] in use as a rubbish pit. It was resurveyed at 1:2500. {1} Archaeological trial trenching undertaken in 2024 revealed a large east-west aligned ditch, which was interpreted as the northern terminus of the moat, based on the evaluation and historic maps. The ditch contained several brick fragments which were estimated to be 14th to 16th century in date, giving the moat a late Medieval date. {5}{6}
