Full Description
PRN 22093
Goll Grange built by Clement, Prior of Spalding, about 1318. In 1540 passed to King and, by 1667-76 ceased to exist as agricultural unit. Two large mounds in a wheatfield west of Wheat Mere Drain, Cowbit Fen, opposite point at which Welland Bank approaches nearest to the drain. At TF269168 - probably represent the main buildings of the grange; and traces of occupation in the field east of the drain, the outbuildings. {1}{2}{3}
Indicated area west of Wheat Mere Drain under crop. Surface very undulating but the 'large mounds' could not be identified east of drain extensive modern field drainage under pasture, no surface traces of occupation O.S. 495 were evident. {1}
Fieldwalking. Two visits to the west side of earthwork identified as Goll Grange by H Hallam, two fairly distinct squarish mounds are clearly visible and on them a great deal of building material, broken stone, brick and tile. Only three miscellaneous sherds of medieval pottery. East side of earthwork across Wheatmere Drain is a semi-permanent pasture. {4}
THERE ARE TWO SILTY MOUNDS AT TF 2690 1682, ONE SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN THE OTHER, YIELDING MEDIEVAL POTTERY. THE LOWER ONE YIELDED THE DENSEST SCATTER OF POTTERY, OVER-FIRED TILES AND BOURNE B WARE. {5}
STONE WAS REVEALED DURING PLOUGHING IN THE 1970s. {11}, HTM 2.5M
During a watching brief at TF 2689 1691 occasional brick fragments were found within surrounding topsoil which are thought to be from the site of Goll Grange. {12}{13}
Evaluation of two mounds originally purported to be the site of the grange, identified a well preserved natural landscape which shows the transition from marine to freshwater sediments. Dumped upon the natural deposits were extensive layers of silt, which formed the two mounds. The function of these dumped deposits is unclear, although they may represent nothing more than upcast from cleaning out the Wheat Mere Drain. Cut into the mounds were a number of undated and post medieval pits and a post hole. Undated ditches were also identified. Although Roman pottery was recovered, it was retrieved as unstratified material and likely to have come from adjacent settlement. Most of the finds were dateable to the post medieval period and include locally made pottery, brick and a small quantity of metalwork, including a Nuremburg jetton of 16th to 17th century date. {14}{15}
Excavations in advance of the realignment of the A1073 concentrated on two low silt mounds,the largest of which sealed a probable 14th century ditch. This could be part of the rectilinear field system assocaited with Goll Grange. Other features excavated include a late medieval pit. {16}{17}
