Full Description

DITCHED MOUND, ABOUT 60FT WIDE AND 3 FT HIGH, STEAM MILL LOT, CROWLAND, EXCAVATED AND LEVELLED IN 1880. AN ABUNDANCE OF RUDE POTTERY FOUND IN DITCH. NEAR SIDES OF MOUND WERE SEVERAL CINERARY URNS, INCLUDING SOME OF ROMAN WARE. ONE URN OF NATIVE GAULTY CLAY, 10 INCHES ACROSS AND 8 INCHES HIGH AND SEALED WITH CLAY, CONTAINED BURNT BONES AND ASHES. LAYERS OF ASHES OCCURED IN THE MOUND. FLINT SPEARHEADS AND ARROWHEADS, BORERS, SCRAPERS, KNAPPERS, RUBBING STONES, BONE SEAL, BRONZE CELT AND AN IRON HAMMER-HEAD WERE FOUND (SITE OF FINDS NOT SPECIFIED). A GREAT QUANTITY OF CHIPPINGS WERE FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF A SHALLOW HOLE NEAR THE TUMULUS.{1}{2}{4}
