PRN 20553 also incorporating PRN 20554
Features dating to the late Iron Age/early Roman transition, comprising small pits and gullies containing charcoal, animal bone, pottery and briquetage, were recorded. These features are likely to represent small scale industrial activity and occupation amongst a series of natural streams and channels. {1}{2}
Archaeological excavation centred on TF2316 2179 recorded numerous features. Several drip gullies were the earliest features on the site, indicating domestic activity. Several small pits may also be associated with domestic occupation. A large rectangular ditched enclosure measuring, 7.5m by 12m internally, was thought to post-date most, if not all, of the drip gullies. An entrance in the eastern side was bounded by two markedly different pit forms.{3}{4}
Evidence for saltmaking was found across the site, with unique forms of briquetage noted, demonstrating a late Iron Age/transitional date for saltmaking activity. However, difficulties with the dating of the pottery have made it impossible to narrow the date range for the site.{3}{4}
Environmental sampling indicates a high intertidal mudflat or roddon, from which the sea had retreated. A house mouse skeleton forms part of the animal bone assemblage, which is an unusual find. Other animal bones showed evidence of butchery.{3}{4}
During test pitting at the site in 1997, fragments of fired red clay were recovered which may have been briquetage. {5}
