Full Description

PRN 20552 Crowland Bridge is unique. Built in 1360-90 by the Benedictine brethen over tributaries of the Nene and the River Welland it now stands high and dry near the market place. It is formed of three pointed half- arches in the form of a triangle and on the south arm is a seated figure in stone said to be variously of Christ in Majesty and of King Elthelbald, founder of Abbey. Scheduled.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5} PART OF A LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL MAINTAINABLE HIGHWAY. CALLED BY GOUGH 'THE GREATEST CURIOSITY IN BRITAIN, IF NOT IN EUROPE'. THE TRIANGULAR BRIDGE CONSISTS OF THREE ARCHES JOINED TO EACH OTHER AT AN ANGLE OF 120 DEGREES. THE FUNCTION OF THE BRIDGE WAS TO SERVE THREE STREAMS AT THE JUNCTION OF THE NENE AND WELLAND. ITS DATE IS THE LATER C14, ALTHOUGH A SIMILAR BRIDGE IS MENTIONED IN 943. THE BRIDGE MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN THE BASE OF A GREAT CROSS. THE MOULDINGS OF THE ARCH RIBS ARE PARTLY HOLLOW CHAMFERS, PARTLY WAVY CHAMFERS. THE LARGE SEATED FIGURE, PROBABLY OF CHRIST, IS QUITE POSSIBLY FROM THE GABLE OF THE ABBEY WEST FRONT. THE DATE CERTAINLY SEEMS TO BE THAT OF THE WEST FRONT. {7}, HTM 4M A watching brief was undertaken prior to repairs being made on the bridge, post medieval rubbish was found by no signs of any earlier archaeology was identified. {10}{11}{12}
