Full Description

There are entries for Gedney (or Gadenai) in the Domesday Book. The King owned land and a fishery. There was a manor there which had land in Holbeach and Whaplode, and was owned by Count Alan. {1} It is possible that Gedney was founded on old saltern mounds. {2}{3} While trial trenching at TF 4026 2420 a gully, which may have either been used for drainage or land division was recorded. Three sherds of 15th century Bourne D ware were recovered from the fill of the gully. {4}{5}
