Full Description

Stukeley Hall was built in 1922 by W.E Norman Webster, in a muddled magpie style. There is a stable block. The house stands on the site of the one of the artisan mannerist family of William Stukeley, the antiquarian. The garden is in typical corporation style. {1} The grounds of the Hall have evolved over a period of time and it is estimated that some of the oak trees could be 200 years old. It is thought that the walled garden is of 18th century origin. Much of the gardened area to the east of the Hall and fringing the walls to the north are relatively new. Between these two periods various ornamental plantings have been undertaken and several structures constructed. {2} Pevsner was incorrectly informed. Norman Webster re-vamped a house which was clearly 18th century, and not particularly mannerist/artisan. He added a good deal in artisan/mannerist style, which he was rather fond of. The house has been demolished. There was a house at approximately this grid reference that was described as the 'old rectory', but the source has not been confirmed. {3} A historic park recorded on the first edition and 1905 Ordnance Survey maps at Stukeley Hall, Holbeach. {4}{5}
