Full Description

THERE ARE FIVE SCATTERS OF ROMAN MATERIAL THAT APPEAR TO FORM A SETTLEMENT COMPLEX. POTTERY FROM THE COMPLEX INCLUDES EARLY MATERIAL, SUCH AS AMPHORA, EARLY GREY WARES (LATE C1 TO LATE C2) AND SAMIAN, AS WELL AS LATE GREY WARES (LATE C3-C4). BUT THE OUTSTANDING FEATURE OF THE POTTERY ASSEMBLAGE IS THE UNUSUALLY HIGH PROPORTION OF COLOUR-COATED WARES. THE COLOUR-COATED WARES ARE LIKELY TO BE PREDOMINANTLY C3-C4 WARES FROM THE NENE VALLEY, AND TO INCLUDE THE COARSER WARES WHICH TEND TO BE C4. IT ALSO GIVES A CLUE FOR THE DATE OF THE INUNDATION OF THIS AREA - THE SITES DATING TO THE LATER ROMAN PERIOD WOULD HAVE BEEN IN USE DURING FLOODING. {1, HTM 3M
