Full Description
Westhorpe is one of the long established hamelts in Gosberton parish, although it is not mentioned in the Domesday Book. Scatters of pottery, tile, bone and shell were identified in a dark soil stain area which extends further than the spread of artefacts. Pottery from the 14th century onwards was recovered, and identified as products of the kilns at Bourne and Toynton. Westhorpe is one of only a handful of 'Thorpe' names in the fens. It suggests a Scandinavian foundation though it has no record in Domesday and no pre-conquest pottery was found in the walked fields. {1}
