Full Description
PRN 13308
A field evaluation at Wide Bargate (TF 33080 44630) revealed a brick-lined post medieval well and building remains as well as some diagnostic c16th century Bourne ware pottery. {1}{2}, htm 15m
A watching brief in November 2005 to March 2006, revealed evidence of early post medieval occupation, most notably in the area south of Nos. 62 to 74 Horncastle Road. The remains (TF 33070 44548) included a clay floor and brick walls, aligned east to west and probably relating to the same building. A single course of half bricks extended north from the northernmost of the walls, possibly representing the foundation of a lean-to or similar structure, while a brick hearth lay at the same level as the walls. A shallow pit containing the remains of a fire was also recorded. Elsewhere on the development, extending west and north of Nos. 62 - 74, evidence of post medieval activity was more fragmentary, comprising various layers and sporadic finds. {3}{4}
A trial trench evaluation in April 2005 revealed evidence of 19th century buildings on land immediately north of the former Asda supermarket. Two trial trenches were excavated, both on approximate east to west alignments. The southernmost (Trench 1) contained a stone surface at approximately 1.6m below existing ground level, with north to south brick walls to either side. Floor surfaces in brick and stone occupied the western and eastern ends of the trench respectively, extending to abut the adjacent walls. The central area was interpreted as an external surface, with the walls defining the edges of structures to either side. Overlying the brick floor was a layer of coal dust indicating use as a coal store. Above the latter, iron barrel hoops were retrieved from a general demolition or levelling layer, suggesting an association with the Bout Green Brewery, which formerly stood on the site. In Trench 2, a 19th century posthole was located at around 1.15m below existing ground level. It was sealed by Victorian and later deposits. {5}{6}
