Full Description

An Iron Age and Roman settlement and salt-working site. The briquetage includes rectangular bars and supports. The site is defined by a soilmark on a clay surface close to an undated roddon and is slightly mounded. The site being excavated by Boston and District Archaeological Society (c.1990). {1} Excavations were of a rubbish dump containing equal quantities of animal bone, pottery and a substantial quantity of briquetage. Much of the pottery survived as large unabraded sherds and almost all had a date range from the late first to the mid second century AD. The nature of the survival of the pottery would suggest that there is a settlement site very close by. The pottery types include Samian, a mortarium, grey wares, course vesicular cooking and storage vessels and colour-coated. The quantity of BB1 (a type of black-burnished grey ware) pottery from Dorset is interesting as the ware is rare in Lincolnshire and suggests coastal trade. Such trade is usually primarily for commodities other than pottery and may suggest evidence of a salt trade from Wrangle. There were some crucible fragments but as yet work to establish the type of metal-working involved has not been carried out. {2}
