Full Description

Late Saxon/medieval settlement site at TF 4450 5313 containing late Saxon pottery, bone and one iron object. A series of islands of pre-Flandrian deposits are exposed in the field. Silt around the edges. Clearly an early centre of occupation and may be the site of 'Wolmersty'. At TF 44485318 is a settlement site of late Saxon to early medieval date with pottery, bone and a possible whetstone fragment recovered. {1} The evidence for the late Saxon foundation for the settlement of Wolmersty is overwhelming, and it appears to have been a significant place at that time, for it provided an early, if short-lived name for the wapentake later called Skirbeck. A seaward location for the settlement, on the borders of Wrangle and Friskney, is suggested by historical sources. There are features visible on aerial photographs which appear to be the remains of moated sites. Some late and post-medieval sherds are present, but by that time Wolmersty had declined in population. Wolmersty survived as a manor until at least the reign of Henry IV. Evidently the place was still recognised until after 1529 but by the turn of the nineteenth century had become deserted and the name lost. {2}
