Full Description

A series of features comprising of enclosures and a possible ditch were identified during archaeological work on land off Ermine Street, North Rauceby. The features were in proximation to a possible prehistoric boundary (MLI84442). Geophysical surveying in 2013 revealed a series of rectilinear features consisting of complete and incomplete enclosures as well as a fragmentary curvilinear anomaly, running approximately northeast to southwest, and was identified as a ditch. Other anomalies were identified as possible ditches. {1} During excavations undertaken in 2014, one enclosure on the eastern portion of the area and the cirvilinear feature was excavated. A single sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from the durvilinear ditch. The enclosure revealed sherds of mid to late pre Roman Iron Age pottery. It is likely these features are related to the Iron Age settlement acivity to the east (MLI128094). {2}
