Full Description
A series of features were identified at Ermine Street, North Rauceby. Initial geophysical surveying in 2013 identified two sets of enclosures/small fields and pit alignments within the eastern portion of the surveyed area. Some of the enclosures aligned with the boundary ditch also identified during the survey that formed part of the prexisting prehistoric boundary ditch (MLI84442), though some of the enclosures appeared disconnected to this feature.
Archaeological evaluation undertaking in 2014 revealed pottery fragments dated to the mid to late Iron Age. The finds revealed that the features are not in relation to the major boundary, which possibly predates the settlement features.
A trench in the southern portion of the features adjacent to the major field boundary revealed several features indicitave of settlement activity, which included stone foundations for a wall, possible trackways and a pit identified as a possible cess pit (infilled in the 2nd century AD). Pottery samples recovered from the trench indicate an occupation period from the 1st to 3rd century AD. {1}{2}
