Full Description

A series of interconnected drains of uncertain date, forming a sub-rectangular enclosure within the woodland at Naylor's Hills, Laughterton. The drains are depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map, indicating they are of at least 19th century date. Some speculation has been offered to suggest this might be the remains of a medieval moated site. {1} A site visit conducted in March 2019 investigated the sub-rectangular area of land bounded by the drains. It has been previously suggested that the drains might possibly be defining a medieval moated site. This interpretation was thought to be highly unlikely after the visit, although the exact origin or function of the drains could not be determined. A general post-medieval date for the drains is thought more likely. {2}
