Full Description

A group of pits and a possible demolition layer of Medieval date were identified during an archaeological excavation on this site in August 2017. One of the pits had straight sides and an apparently intentionally ridged base; it is unclear what function this served. The possible demolition layer comprised a spread of silty clay that appeared to have accumulated in natural hollows. No bone was recovered from this layer, making it unlikely to be the result of domestic occupation. Finds recovered from these features included possibly residual fragments of an imported quern stone from the Niedermendig area of the Rhineland and locally produced Toynton ware pottery. {1}{2}
