Full Description
The remains of a medieval pit and boundary ditch were recorded in this location in August 2020, during archaeological monitoring of new residential development on land off Broadgate, Whaplode Drove. The pit was located at the south-western edge of the new house footprint, and was oval in shape and aligned roughly east to west. Nine thin-walled body sherds from an 11th to 12th century, coarsely sand-tempered black-fabric pottery vessel were recovered from its fill, along with a single fragment from the left ulna of a probable adult cow.
The ditch cut across the whole new house footprint, along a roughly east to west alignment, though seemed to turn to the north-east at the eastern end, possibly marking the corner of a larger enclosure. The ditch measured roughly 1.5m wide along its length, with three sherds from a Bourne-type medieval coarseware vessel dating from the 12th to 14th centuries being recovered from its fill. {1}{2}
