Full Description

Sir Christopher Wray (1524-92 AD) had a castellated mansion at Ashby, surrounded by a moat. The present house within the moat largely dates from the early 19th century (see MLI42084). The remains of an 'ancient' brick tower formerly standing in front of house within the moat was demolished in 1826. {1}{2}{3}{4} The former moat is visible as earthworks, holding water along parts of the circuit. It is visible as an incomplete, four-sided enclosure measuring roughly 40m by 45m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {5}
