Full Description

A memorial to the crews of two military airplanes stands in this location, to the east of Ash Holt Wood, Scopwick. Dedicated in September 2014, the memorial honours the 7 crew members of Avro Lancaster LM130 (see MLI125416), and the pilot of Hawker Hurricane PZ740 (see MLI125417), who died when their planes collided and crashed in this area during the Second World War. The memorial takes the form of a mounted plaque, inscribed with the names of the crew members who died, and a planted Japanese Acer tree. {1} Very sadly, the planted Acer tree did not take to the site, and has not survived, although the memorial site is now also marked by a wooden cross, standing alongside the mounted plaque. {2}
