Full Description

A Hawker Hurricane Mk IIC fighter aircraft crashed on land to the north-east of Scopwick, on the 11th of March 1945. The aircraft was designated PZ740 of 1960 Flight, and was based at RAF Metheringham. It is thought to have been taking part in a night fighter affiliation training exercise when it collided with Lancaster LM130 (see MLI125416), causing both planes to crash to the ground. The pilot did not survive the crash. The exact crash site of the Hurricane is not known, although it is thought to have been close to the Lancaster crash site, on land to the east of Ash Holt Wood. Photographs taken shortly after the accident show that, whilst extensively damaged, most of the wreckage of the plane lay on the surface of the field. It is therefore thought likely that the majority of the remains of the plane were recovered by the crash investigators shortly after the accident. {1}{2} A memorial to the fallen crew members of both planes was unveiled on the edge of Ash Holt Wood in September 2014 (see MLI127875). {3}
