Full Description
Site of the former Church of St Margaret at Woodhall. The church is thought to have been built in the 14th century, or possibly earlier, and may have originally formed part of the wider medieval moated manorial complex of Woodhall, located to the south (see MLI43590). The church was declared redundant at some point in the early 1970s, and was subsequently demolished in 1973, with no remains thought to still survive. The building's exact former location is clearly marked on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. Whilst still standing, the church was described as having a tower and base courses constructed of greenstone, though with most of the rest of the church being of brick. This use of brick would suggest the structure had been largely rebuilt at some point in the 19th century. Large buttresses on the western tower carried an arch on the western elevation up to the bell stage, above which was a thin spire with waist-band and thinner spirelets.
