Full Description

An archaeological evaluation in March 1999 revealed a series of post-Medieval dumped deposits, probably indicating an intentional raising of the ground level. The earliest of these deposits sealed a 0.5m deep probable former topsoil of 16th century date. Cut into the buried topsoil was a mortared brick- and tile-lined culvert. 17th and 18th century pottery and animal bone were recovered from within the culvert, suggesting it was intentionally filled in during the 18th century. A ditch and several modern waste pits were observed cutting later layers. {1}{2}
