Full Description

41 Watergate, Grantham, is a former public house (known as "The Playhouse") of late 18th to early 19th century date. It was previously a mixed commercial and residential terraced building. The building is a three storey brick building with a pantile gabled roof, with three ridge brick chimney stacks. The lower storey is rendered, with the upper two storeys being of painted brick. The east elevation, facing the street, consists of seven irregular bay windows, the entranceway is off centre of the fifth bay. A signpost of the former pub is present above the entranceway. The remains of a former brick cross wing is present to the rear, with a later two storey 19th century extension present and a further 20th century extension attach to that. A late 20th century single storey lean-to, which contains the former bar, is present of the east end of the southern elevation. The interior of the building is open plan on the round floor, reflecting its conversion from shops to a pub. The first and seconds floors show similar levels of alterations. The earliest known depiction of the building is from the 1887 Ordinance Survey map, which depicts two separate buildings separated by a walkway, and ancillary structures to the rear. A late 19th centry photograph shows the building with two shows fronts at street level, with shop extensing to the second storey on the northenmost side. Kelly's Directories from 1889 to 1909 shows a individual named George Shipman lived at the premise. A three storey cross wing with adjoining ancillary structures is visible on a 1929 aerial photo. The building was converted into a pub between 1987-1990, and was known as "The Gate House" Inn, before being renamed to "The Playhouse". The conversion led to the removal of the shop frontage to be replaced by sash windows. {1}
