Full Description

Three trial trenches were excavated in advance of proposed development of land adjacent to Narrow Lane, Belchford, in February 2013. Evidence of Medieval occupation of the site was recorded in the form of a number of pits, a gully, and a robbed wall trench. A range of Medieval pottery types was recovered, though the majority appeared to date to the 13th and 14th centuries. {1}{2} A subsequent programme of archaeological monitoring and recording and an archaeological excavation recorded a group of Medieval features including the rubble foundation of two walls, as well as pits and ditches. A large quantity of Medieval pottery was recovered, primarily mid 13th-mid 15th century Toynton Medieval Ware. {3}{4}
