Full Description
Two pits were uncovered durin archaeological trial trenching (ELI14592) on land at 20 Gosberton Road, Surfleet. The primary evidence of activity consisted of two pits located within the same trench on the northern portion of the surveyed area. The western most feature consisted of a consisted of a large linear cut with steep sides, identified as either a large pit or channel. The full extent of the feature was not excavated, however, the lack of features in the trenches to the south indicate that this may have been a large pit. Contained within this pit was a charred deposit containing remnants of burnt, largely cleaned, grain. The presence of the grains has been interpretated as the result of accidental burning during preparation, or the result of the destruction of a nearby storage facility. The easternmost feature large circular cut, with steep sides and a concave base, identified as a pit.
Recovered during the excavation was 20 sherds of pottery, the majority of of which were medieval in date. The earliest sherds were recovered from the westernmost pitand date from the 10th to 12th century. {1}{2}
