Full Description

A landowner machine excavating on their land in February 2023 encountered human remains, at which point on the instruction of Lincolnshire County Council an archaeologist attended the site to excavate according to proper guidelines and law. The excavation was extended to capture the full extent of the features present. The skeletal remains of an individual were recorded within a discrete oval-shaped steep sided grave cut, with a fill which included a probably residual Mesolithic core bladelet flake. While the state of preservation was good, the skeletal remains had been damaged by machine excavation prior to an archaeologist being present on the site. The cranium and a portion of the upper body were found in situ with other bones were recovered from the spoil heap. Radiocarbon dating gave a date for the individual of 395-208 BC (cal), placing them within the Middle Iron Age. Some evidence for post-mortem damage while the bone retained collagen was noted along with the presence of a cyst during life, and the individual was considered to have had poor dental health associated with poor nutrition, high levels of stress during childhood, and poor hygeine. While the skeleton was considered relatively gracile, it was though to be a possible male adult of 45+ years. The ditch and pit or possible posthole were archaeological sterile, and so their association with the burial is uncertain as Iron Age burial practices often varied. A buried soil surface possibly associated with hillwash was also recorded, as the burial was sited in the middle of a large hollow leading to lower ground with the excavators suggesting the position may have been deliberately chosen. {1}{2}
