Full Description
Remains associated with two probable medieval dwellings were recorded during trial trenching on the site including three runs of linear stone wall, a floor or path surface, and a probable drainage ditch and pit. {1}[2}
The three runs of stone wall were considered to represent two buildings based on their orientations with two forming a right angle to each other, and the third being on a slightly different alignment. No foundation cuts were visible due to later action on the soil, but the walls themselves were clearly visible to at least six and seven courses in places. A large fragment of a mortar made from a probable reused font was noted to have possibly been reused as building material. Ceramic tiles and iron nails found are also suggestive of the form of the buildings.
Deposits on the site including a probable demolition layer contained domestic medieval pottery (and a single sherd of post-medieval pottery). Forms present were mostly jugs, bowls, and jars. In conjunction with butchered animal bone the assemblage is very likely domestic in nature.
A ditch and posthole on the site were undated, but were considered by the exacavators to be associated with the buildings.
