Full Description

A programme of geophysical survey in 2008 recorded a complex of enclosures on land to the west of Binbrook, representing a settlement probably dating to the Iron Age or Roman periods. The northern limit of the settlement is demarcated by a large east-west aligned boundary ditch, which also formed the northern side of a sub-square enclosure. Within the complex are a clearly definited rectangular enclosure with its long axis aligned east-west with an entrance in the centre of each of its shorter sides. Also recorded was an oval enclosure on a similar alignment. Both contained internal pit-like anomalies. Other possible pits or areas of burning were identified within the enclosure system. Several other possible rectangular and sub-rectangular enclosures and a ring ditch were identified against the western edge of the survey area, with the western extent of the settlement not established. {1}
