Full Description
The remains of a sandstone wall foundation of probable early Roman date were recorded on land to the east of Bargate Lane, Horncastle, during trial trenching in October 2012. The foundation comprised three courses of rough sandstone blocks with sand between them but no mortar. Sherds of black burnished and Samian ware of 2nd century AD date were recovered from the construction cut. A chalky white mortar floor surface and a section of opus signinum were encountered to the south of the wall, implying that this may have been the interior of a building. These surfaces were truncated by a robber trench of supposed late 2nd century AD date. {1}{2}
