Full Description

A series of linear features were uncovered during a programme of archaeological trial trenching (ELI14480) on land at Surfleet Road, Pinchbeck. These were identified as 3 drainages ditches and a boundary ditch. Two linear features, running northeast to southwest, were uncovered within trenches 2 and 4. The similar alignment indicated that they were part of the same drainage ditch. Sherds of mid-12th to early/mid 13th century pottery was uncovered from trench 2, with mecieval date wares recovered from trench 4. Another linear feature in trench 2, running north to south, is believed to be the same drainage ditch as a northwest to southeast linear feature in trench 3. The feature in trench 2 contained sherds of post-medieval pottery of c. 18th century date, and sherds of late 17th to early 18th century date were recovered from trench 3. Trenches 3 and 8 revealed a east west aligned field boundary that appears on 19th century mapping and existed until the 1950s. {1}{2}
