At the western end of the site, close to the modern route of Ermine Street, a pair of parallel ditches of Roman date were encountered during the cutting of a section of service trench. These ditches were aligned approximately north-south, slightly off the alignment of the road. Four sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the fills of these ditches. {1}{2}
