Full Description
Excavations recorded a nearly complete, rare female-styled Roman head pot in association with ditches, pits, and two possible structures.
Four phases of activity were recorded, the earliest dating to the 1st to early 2nd century comprising gullies, and several pits. The second phase of activity dated to the 2nd century was found to suggest the first evidence for agriculture on the site in the form of charred emmer/spelt wheat, and crop weeds identified in the fill of one of a small number of pits, along with a boundary ditch.
The third phase encompassing the 3rd to 4th century suggests an increase in the previously sparse activity on the site, with a larger number of ditches and pots recorded, along with a possible building. The fourth phase also dating to the 4th century recorded an L shaped gully possibly representing a building, in addition to more pitting. The head pot along with a copper alloy brooch also belong to the fourth phase. The head pot has been suggested to form part of a structured deposition, having been deposited with a 2nd century copper alloy brooch which would already have been an antique or heirloom at the time of deposition, and the partial remains of a horse.
Overall the site appears to have been largely open, with some evidence for agricultural activity in the area. At least some of the pits were interpreted as being used for clay extraction. {1}{2}
