Full Description
Settlement remains of Medieval and early post-Medieval date were encountered on land to the north of Middlesykes Lane, Grimoldby, during archaeological excavation in 2019. A number of small ditches and gullies dating to the 11th-13th centuries were encountered; these likely represent property boundaries or internal subdivisions of larger plots. Sealing a number of these gully features was a layer of trampled or poached soil dating to the 13th century, representing an area of intense use. This was formalised with the creation of a large cobbled chalk surface, likely a working yard of some kind, from which were recovered over 100 metal objects including knives, buckles, horseshoes, and a large number of nails. A dump of hearth waste and re-used building stone forming part of the surface suggest the presence of a structure of some kind in the vicinity (possibly closer to Middlesykes Lane). The surface appears to have gone out of use by the 15th to 16th centuries, evidenced by overlying layers containing quantities of domestic waste. To the east of this surface was a smaller discrete platform of unknown use, again formed of chalk cobbles and containing pottery of 12th to 14th century date. A large ditch running approximately parallel to the lane to the northwest, dating to the 12th to 14th centuries, may represent a settlement boundary. {1}{2}
