Full Description

A ditch was revealed during archaeological excavations at 8A Chapel Street, Caistor. The ditch ran east-west at the southern portion of the excavated trench with moderately steep sloping sides running towards the base. Only the northern portion was uncovered by the trench, indicating that the ditch was greater than 2.35m wide and 1.1m deep. Several limestone blocks were recovered from the earliest fill of the ditch at a depth of 0.6m. The blocks were roughtly hewn, rectangular shaped, and came in a veriety of different sizes. Coarse lime mortar still adhered to one of the blocks was also recovered from this fill. It is believed this was the result of an adjacent wall adjacent to the ditch being demolished while the ditch was still open. The proximity of the ditch to the roman wall as well as it's comparision to other similar ditches in the area, suggest that the ditch was part of the Roman fortifications. {1}{2}
