Full Description
A number of perpendicular linear features were recorded during a magnetometry geophysical survey in January 2024, which due to their arrangement and morphology were considered to possibly represent a rural Roman settlement which likely continues to the south of the surveyed areas. It is also possible that some of the dipolar responses may represent associated industrial features. {1}
Follow up excavations in February and March 2024 confirmed the results of the geophysics. Pottery recovered from the settlement site was suggestive of an initial late 2nd to early 3rd century date for the settlement, with the sequence ending in the later 3rd to 4th century. The ditches and enclosures recorded suggest a field system, with no readily identifiable domestic core although tegula and box flue tiles are suggestive of a relatively high status building nearby. Animal bones including cattle, pigs, sheep/goat, goose, and dog, along with environmental evidence for wheat and slept are further suggestive of an agricultural settlement. {2}{3}
