Summary
An area of pitting and ditches of uncertain purpose were recording during archaeological trenching at Blacksmiths Lane, North Road, Tetford. Finds including butchered animal bone and pottery were recovered with a broad date range of between 1250 and 1850, along with 20th century material. The assemblage was considered representative of dumping, possibly of domestic nature.

Full Description
An area of pitting and ditches of uncertain purpose were recording during archaeological trenching at Blacksmiths Lane, North Road, Tetford. A definitive purpose for the features was not identified, however pottery recovered from the trenches was broadly uniformly abraded which was considered diagnostic of a deliberate deposition, likely dumping from the late medieval period through into the post-medieval period. It was considered possible that a pit on the site was at least partially waterlogged, and therefore may represent a well. The earliest recovered wares were Toynton Ware, dated to 1250 to 1450, with Toynton Late Medieval Ware (1450 to 1550) and Reduced Glazed Red Earthernware (1600 to 1850) also recorded. A medieval roof tile, and a part of 19th to 20th century clay pipe were also recovered. A small quantity of butchered animal bone was recorded, consistent with domestic waste or small scale leather production. {1}{2}
