Full Description

Pits and ditches associated with Medieval settlement to the west of Watery Lane, Mareham le Fen. Seven small undated ditches, aligned north-northeast to south-southwest or east-northeast to west-southwest. may be contemporary with a number of Medieval ditches on the same alignment identified during previous trial trenching in the adjacent field (see MLI127068). Also encountered were two large north-south aligned ditches at the northern end of the site, within the current farmyard of Moat Farm. 13th-15th century pottery was recovered from both features. Environmental sampling of the eastern ditch revealed a large quantity of burnt grain, interpreted as a deliberate dumping event, possibly after the accidental burning of a grain store. At the southern end of the site, a large pit was identified. Pottery, the partial skeleton of a large adult dog, environmental remains including charred wheat, barley, pulse, sloe, hazelnut, fish and frog bones, chicken eggshell and freshwater mussel were all recovered from this feature, which was interpreted as a gravel extraction pit repurposed as a domestic waste pit. {1}{2}
