Description

A fluxgate gradiometer survey was conducted to inform proposed residential development on land at Moat Farm, Watery Lane, Mareham le Fen. Two strong magnetic anomalies were detected in the south of the survey area, interpreted as possible dumps of tiles from nearby kilns (see ELI14045). Two weaker signals just to the northeast were considered too poorly defined and interpreted as geological in origin. {1} Subsequent trial trenching (see ELI14050) confirmed the identified strong anomalies as archaeological in origin. They were interpreted as Medieval gravel extraction pits repurposed for the dumping of domestic waste, rather than the waste from tile kilns. A number of shallow ditches not identified in this survey were also encountered across the whole survey area. Most align closely with the direction of survey and may have been lost during the de-striping process.
