Full Description

Site of Holmeleigh (or Holmleigh) Children's Home, a former mid-20th century children's home. When the Horncastle workhouse on Foundry Street (MLI43732) closed down, the building was converted into a nursery, and five new 'cottage home' buildings, each consisting of two homes, were built to house older children. Holmeleigh Children's Home opened on 7th February 1934, with the five buildings named Dunham, Hipkin, Chatterton and Croft-Baker. The homes were designed by county architect Philip Walter Birkett (ARIBA), who took inspiration from Countesthorpe Cottage Homes near Leicester (built in the 1880s) and the Fulwood Cottage Homes in Sheffield (built 1905). The cottages were divided between boys', girls', and mixed cottages; once boys reached the age of 11 they were moved from the boys' cottages to a mixed cottage. As well as attending local schools, the boys were trained in gardening, engineering, and handicrafts, and the girls were trained in laundry work, sewing, and general domestic duties. The home was closed in 1968. Two of the five cottage home buildings have been demolished. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The five accommodation blocks were listed as non-designated heritage assets in the Horncastle Neighbourhood Development Plan 2014-2029. {7}
