Full Description

The remains of a northeast-southwest aligned Roman ditch were recorded in this location in July 2014, during trial trenching undertaken to inform the proposed construction of four new residential properties on the site. The ditch, positively dated to the 4th century AD, was identified in the southeast corner of the site. 35 sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the fill of this ditch, as were fragments of possible Roman tegula and Roman tile. Also recovered from the same feature were animal bones from cow, deer, sheep/goat and several bird species including goose, chicken, and waterfowl, as well as mussel and oyster shell fragments. Three fragments of imbrex and eleven sherds of Roman pottery were also recovered from unstratified deposits nearby. {1}
