Description

Two trenches were excavated prior to the construction of four new residential properties on land adjacent to Rose Cottage Garden, 10 Orby Road, Burgh le Marsh. Angular chalk rubble was identified within the subsoil and interpreted as modern, either building waste or material dumped to level the ground. One northeast-southwest aligned ditch, positively dated to the 4th century AD, was identified in the southeast corner of the site. 35 sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the fill of this ditch, as were fragments of possible Roman tegula and Roman tile. Also recovered from the same feature were animal bones from cow, deer, sheep/goat and several bird species including goose, chicken, and waterfowl, as well as mussel and oyster shell fragments. Unstratified Roman and Medieval ceramic finds were also recovered from nearby. {1}
