Full Description
Small country house and former farmhouse owned by the Blankney Estate, constructed in two main phases. The first phase dates to between 1868 and 1870, and consists of a two storey building of smooth-faced stone blocks on a brick plinth with a chamfered stone string course above, under a pitched gabled slate roof with ashlar coped gables, finials, and projecting moulded kneelers. Multi-stack chimneys. A single storey western range may have originally housed domestic servants, and a further grouping of domestic outbuildings was also erected to the west between 1870 and 1888. Both are constructed in the same materials and style as the main house. The house itself was extended to the east in 1907, using rough cut stone blocks.
The house was used by the Red Cross as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers during the First World War. After the war it appears to have lost its association to the farmyard to the north, and was used for a short time as a hunting lodge. During the Second World War the house was requisitioned for use as an RAF hospital.
A plaque inside the 1907 porch reads: THE SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE BRANCH OF THE BRITISH RED CROSS
SOCIETY GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE LOAN OF THIS HOUSE BY THE EARL OF LONDESBOROUGH AS A RED CROSS AUXILIARY HOSPITAL 16 NOVEMBER 1914 – 28 FEBRUARY 1919. 35 BEDS + 788 PATIENTS ADMITTED. STAFF: VADs LINCOLN 1 AND 58’ {1}{2}
