Full Description

Farmstead dating back to at least the early 19th century. The first record of a farmstead on this site was in 1842, when it was occupied by a tenant farmer, Paul Francis Pell. Census records from 1861 list Anne Tomlinson as occupier. The current house was built between 1868-1870, and the first recorded mention of the name 'The Firs' was in an 1892 business directory, though it also appears with that name on the 1888 1st Edition 25 inch OS map, on which the house can be seen within a formal garden and the outbuildings can be seen in their current High Farming style E-plan around two crewyards. Both the 1888 and 1905 OS maps show the house and farm buildings as a single plot of land, though this appears to have changed at some point in the early 20th century (see MLI126900). {1}{2}
