Full Description

Late 19th century school building. Large cross-wing plan one and a half storey building of coursed stone, under a pitched gabled tile roof. Two ridge stacks. Ancaster stone window dressings and mullions. {1} Built to replace the neighbouring village school (MLI95794) and a small infant school (MLI126748), the new school was built in local stone by Sir William E. Welby-Gregory using designs of Charles Beasley, Esq. Its original internal layout consisted of a main schoolroom, an infants schoolroom, and a smaller classroom, with cloak-rooms and lavatories. All the rooms had ceilings and floors of wooden boards, the walls were lined with brick, and each room had an open fireplace as well as a stove for heating water. {2} The school is shown in its current plan form on the 1904 OS map of Denton. {3}
