Full Description

Former Wesleyan school building. Significantly altered and extended to the south. One single storey range to the north built in red brick in Flemish Bond, under a hipped roof of slate. Small combined bell tower and chimney stack on roof ridge. This range is in ruinous condition. Adjacent to the south is a much altered red brick two storey range under a pitched gabled slate roof, with a dedication stone at the gable end. This range has been partially rebuilt and extended to the south to create a residential dwelling. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory links this Day School with the Methodist Chapel (MLI99117) founded in 1816. It states that the school was built in 1856 at cost of £500, and was attended at the time by 70 pupils. The building is marked as a Wesleyan Day School on the 1887 OS map. By the publication of the 1906 map, however, it is marked as a Sunday School, suggesting a change in use. {2}{3}{4} It is unclear when the building ceased to be used as a school.
