Full Description

Former school. Single storey red brick building in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of tile. The north-western gable and porch gable both have decorative stone finials, string courses below the eaves, and stone corbels on the gable shoulders. A two storey modern extension has been added to the southeastern end of the building. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school was built, along with a house for the teachers (MLI126564), in 1848. {2} In 1925 the older pupils at the school and their parents went on 'strike', refusing to enter until the plans to convert the school into a junior school were abandoned. By January the next year the strike had ended in failure, and the school re-opened as a junior school. {3}{4} By 1962 the school was attended by only 21 children and the local Development Plan called for the school to be closed and the remaining pupils to be sent to Toynton All Saints county school, though it appears this scheme was delayed for a couple of years due to insufficient space at Toynton All Saints. {5}{6} The exact date of closure is unknown.
