Full Description

Primary school. Cross-wing plan red brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a steeply pitched gabled roof of slate, with a bonnet roof at the southwest end. Large three pointed arch windows on the southwest gable elevation. The two storey brick house to the east may have been built as a schoolmaster's house. {1} White’s 1856 Trade Directory states that the school was erected in 1854. {2} A new classroom was built to the rear of the original building in 1994. A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks prior to the classroom's construction. No archaeological features were encountered, although a large quantity of 19th/early 20th century pottery and glass was recovered from a deposit, presumably representing occupational waste from the adjacent school. {3}{4}
