Full Description
Former School. Two buildings. The northeastern building is a narrow two storey painted brick construction in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. One gable stack. Only one wall of the southwestern building survives, constructed of buff brick in Flemish Bond. This now forms the northwest elevation of a modern bungalow built in machine-cut yellow brick. {1}
White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school in Goulceby was originally built in around 1750 and was rebuilt in 1826 at a cost of £80, £20 of which was donated by the National Society. The school was described as a Free School and accommodated for the education of children from the Goulceby and Asterby parishes. {2}
The 1905 OS map shows two buildings on the site. The northeast building can be seen in much the same plan form as the current building. The building to the southwest, of which only one wall appears to survive, is larger and has a T-shape plan form, with a wide street frontage and a cross-wing to the rear. {3}
The school appears to have closed in 1958 after continued low attendance, with only five pupils attending in that school year. {4}
