The cemetery at Mareham le Fen is believed to have been established in 1882, and it remains in use to the current day. The cemetery is believed to have been opened in late 1882, after a bye-law for its regulation and management was approved by the Rural Sanitary Authority of Horncastle Union. The site is first depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1887, when it is shown with a non-conformist mortuary chapel (see MLI126479). Later historic mapping show that the original area of the cemetery had been expanded southwards and slightly westwards to its current extent at some point in the first half of the 20th century, most likely shortly prior to 1922, when the Mareham le Fen War Memorial was erected (see MLI125273). {1}{2}{3}{4} Part of the northern boundary of the cemetery is formed from repurposed old headstones. The stones were presumably taken from the older part of the cemetery, after they had become dislodged or unsafe. The older part of the cemetery is now largely clear of headstones, and the original grave locations in this area are no longer marked. {5}
