Full Description
Former Roman Catholic chapel and school, now in use as a village hall and heritage centre. Four bay red brick construction in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate with concrete ridge tiles. Gabled porch to the south. The western gable has a parapet and an aperture for a bell. {1}
The school was closed by the Board of Education on 30th April 1908, due to low average attendance. The building appears to have then been disused until it was gifted to the parish in 1937, for use as a village hall, during the sale of the estate. {2}{3}{4}
The building is shown in the same plan form on the 1887, 1906, and 1950 OS maps of the village. It is marked as a school on all three, incorrectly in the latter case. {5}{6}{7}
White’s 1872 Trade Directory states that a National school was built in the village, along with a house for a schoolmaster, at a cost of £200, paid for by the rector. It is possible that this is the same school, though there is no clear evidence of a schoolmaster’s house nearby. {8}
